11/5/08: Democrats Lose Florida Congressional Seat

Breaking news from ABC.  Florida Congressman Tim Mahoney, who ousted child predator Mark Foley in 2006, is mired in a scandal.

From  ABC:

West Palm Beach Congressman Tim Mahoney (D-FL), whose predecessor resigned in the wake of a sex scandal, agreed to a $121,000 payment to a former mistress who worked on his staff and was threatening to sue him, according to current and former members of his staff who have been briefed on the settlement, which involved Mahoney and his campaign committee.

The affair between Congressman Tim Mahoney and Patricia Allen began, according to current and former staffers, in 2006 when Mahoney was campaigning for Congress against Foley, promising "a world that is safer, more moral."
(ABC News)

Mahoney, who is married, also promised the woman, Patricia Allen, a $50,000 a year job for two years at the agency that handles his campaign advertising, the staffers said.

Mahoney was already in a tough race, and his campaign was heavily focused on "faith and family."  This will all but certainly hand the election to his opponent.

I'm tired of Democratic politicians putting their libido ahead of their party.  They should know the consequences of their actions, and if they decide that an affair is more important than the Democratic Party, they need to leave politics.

Fuck you, Tim Mahoney.

This is toast . . . it would be too late for a replacement candidate to gain traction.

. . . sigh.

It's too late to get a replacement candidate anyway.

Many pundits (none / 0)

Thought Mahoney would have a tough time getting relected in that district...

It's solidly red, and was probably going back to the R column, but looks like Mahoney just mailed the win to the Repubs anyway.

it's only R+2 (none / 0)

FL-16 is not "solidly red," it is only R+2 according to the Cook partisan voting index.

Democrats hold 24 House seats that are at least R+5.

Foley used to rack up big victories because he was an incumbent, but in theory, it shouldn't be considered a deep red district.

Isn't this the candidate that was shoved down local Dems throats by Rahm when we also had progressive potentials?

Re: yes "bad" (none / 0)

I'm not judging him for the affair.  I think he should be free to do that if he wishes.  But like with Edwards, the cover-up is what pisses me off.  And knowing that his actions could embarrass his party... it makes me sick.

Re: 11/5/08: Democrats Lose Florida (2.00 / 1)

This is why we need more women in office. We're not as likely to pull these kinds of stunts as men are.

Re: 11/5/08: Democrats Lose Florida (none / 0)

Well, we need more DEMOCRATIC women in office.

The Republicans ideal Female candidates seem to run more towards Palin, Katherine Harris, Mean Jean, Michelle Bachman, Heather Wilson..

They are every bit as loathsome as their male Republican counterparts.

Vox, didn't you learn anything from this diary?

Re: 11/5/08: Democrats Lose Florida Congressional (none / 0)

I was wrong in that diary, I may be wrong in this one as well.  But I think I'm more likely to be right than wrong.  You think this won't blow up his family values candidacy?

The recording is devastating (none / 0)

If I were a voter in FL-16, I would find it next to impossible to pull a lever for Mahoney after listening to the call where he fired his former girlfriend.  I cannot imagine anyone listening to that call and thinking that Mahoney is a "good guy" or someone who lives his life by "faith and family".  He comes across as a MEAN boss who just fired someone and is enjoying lording it over her.

Consider this seat a trade for NY-13 (Vito Fossella).

by Ephus on Mon Oct 13, 2008 at 02:22:49 PM EST

I just listened to the recording (none / 0)

and I have to say that as big a yellow dog Democrat as I am, I would struggle to mark the box next to his name if I lived in his district.

If we were still in the minority and needed every last seat maybe I could vote for him, but the way he talked came across as so bullying that I don't want him in our caucus.

It's only an R+2 district. Maybe we can find a good candidate for 2010.

Elect more Dem women (none / 0)

Less likely to have these kinds of problems. Women politicians are less likely to develop the big ego that leads to this kind of stupidity.

Re: 11/5/08: (none / 0)

So we can all agree Mahoney is toast.

But i have another thought.  I mean the governer of NY gets caught paying a profession "lady of the night" and has to resign but the senator from LA gets caught and he is still there.

The GOP senator Craig "I am not gay" gets caught being, weoo gay, and he keeps his spot but the democratic governer from NJ gets caught being gay and like Spitzer he has to resign.

It is just funny how the party of moral values keeps getting caught and it is us who have to resign.

Re: 11/5/08: Democrats Lose Florida Congressional (none / 0)

Mahoney is an embarassment.. the way he talks to the woman on the phone call is disgusting...

People should not try to excuse this...Its not just the mistress but there is clearly corruption going on.

When people seem to justify/excuse this by comparing it with republicans I get really ticked off.. This Mahoney guy is a scumbag piece of shit. Good riddance.

Re: 11/5/08: Democrats (none / 0)

Eh.  Wasn't the biggest fan of Mahoney to begin with.  The accidental congressman becomes the one-termer.  I don't especially care, we would have probably lost his seat in redistricting anyways.

by Skaje on Mon Oct 13, 2008 at 03:03:42 PM EST

Congresscretin Tim Mahoney (none / 0)

Was never much of a Democrat to begin with, in fact he was a Republican who late in life became a Democrat for political convenience, so I won't miss him.
But the real concern is how will his downfall effect other Democrats in Florida? Will Florida shift back to the McCain column?
If this were the old days, I would say we should tar and feather Mahoney.

Thank Rahm Emmanuel for this one (none / 0)

Apparently, instead of backing a Dem candidate, Dave Lutrin

http://firedoglake.com/2007/01/06/blue-a merica-from-the-swamps-of-florida-politi cs-please-welcome-a-true-believer-david- lutrin/

Rahm Emmanuel convinced a GOP millionaire, Mahoney, to run for the seat instead.

Good choice, Rahm. <sarcasm>

I'm praying for new Dem leadership in the House & Senate after the election, and the first on my list to be replaced is Emmanuel.

This fake POS is a Republican anyway... (none / 0)

He self identifies as a "Reagan Democrat", he refused to endorse Obama, as he said, He owes the party nothing, it owes him.

Throw this pig out, and kick him in the ass as he is walking through the door.

A bit odd, don't you think? (none / 0)

according to current and former members of his staff who have been briefed on the settlement

His staff hates him so much they leak this to the press 3 weeks before the election? That is very strange. Usually staff work 24/7 to prevent this kind of information from coming out.
